In classrooms across Nigeria, young people are navigating more than just textbooks and examinations. Many are silently carrying the weight of insecurity, social pressure, academic stress, and uncertainty about the future. For some, these challenges manifest as anxiety, emotional withdrawal, fear, or loss of hope — often without the language, space, or support to express what they are going through.
It is within this reality that the Next Youth Initiative (NYI) PET (Peer Empowerment Team) Mental Health Program was born.
The PET Program is a youth-focused mental health empowerment initiative designed to establish safe spaces, peer-led hubs, and support clubs within secondary schools. Through intentional awareness sessions, mentorship, open dialogue, and leadership development, the program equips students with the tools to understand mental health, manage stress, communicate emotions, and support one another with empathy and confidence.

Rather than approaching mental health as a distant or clinical topic, PET brings the conversation directly to young people — in familiar spaces, in relatable language, and through peer connection. It is a program rooted in prevention, compassion, and sustainability.

A Timely Response to a Growing Need
Across many communities in Nigeria, insecurity, displacement, economic hardship, and social instability have left deep emotional scars. Young people are often among the most affected, yet the least supported. Academic expectations continue to rise, while access to mental health education and services remains limited in many schools.
In this context, the PET Program is not only relevant — it is urgent.
By embedding mental health education within schools and empowering students themselves to become advocates and support systems like mental health clubs and mental health community hubs, PET addresses emotional wellbeing at its foundation. The program promotes resilience, early intervention, and collective healing, ensuring that support does not end when facilitators leave, but continues through the structures built within the school community.
⸻
Our Reach and Progress
Since its launch, the PET Program has steadily expanded, reaching secondary schools across Abuja (FCT) and Plateau State. Each outreach is thoughtfully structured to combine education, interaction, and leadership building, ensuring students are not passive recipients but active participants in their mental health journey.
The sessions engage students, teachers, counselors, and school administrators, fostering a shared responsibility for emotional wellbeing within the school environment.

Highlights From Our School Visits
Kenford Academy, Gwagwalada – FCT Abuja
At Kenford Academy, the PET session was marked by enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness. Students actively participated in discussions on emotional wellness, stress management, and peer support. The supportive response from school staff further strengthened the experience, leading to the successful establishment of a PET clubs/hub within the school — a space where students can continue conversations and support one another beyond the session.
Government Secondary School, Bwari – FCT Abuja (Group C)
The engagement at GSS Bwari reflected the deep need for safe spaces among students. Through group activities, dialogue sessions, and practical learning, students explored how to recognize emotional distress in themselves and their peers. Their willingness to speak, ask questions, and share perspectives highlighted how impactful structured mental health conversations can be when young people feel seen and heard.
Abuja Standard College, Dutse – FCT Abuja (Group G)
At Abuja Standard College, students demonstrated growing awareness and maturity around mental health topics. The session encouraged thoughtful questions and peer-to-peer reflections, with students collectively shaping ideas on how PET hubs could function within their school. The atmosphere was one of collaboration, learning, and shared responsibility.
GSS Kufang, Jos South – Plateau State (Group H Launch)
The launch of the PET Program in Plateau State marked a significant milestone in the initiative’s expansion. In a region that has faced prolonged insecurity and trauma, the program was warmly welcomed by students and staff. Many students expressed relief at having a platform to talk, learn, and connect around mental health. The session brought not only education, but also hope — signaling that emotional wellbeing is being recognized and prioritized.

Impact Beyond the Classroom
Across all schools visited, the impact of the PET Program has been both immediate and meaningful. Students are becoming more confident in discussing mental health, more aware of their emotions, and more willing to seek help or offer support to peers. Teachers and school administrators have also expressed appreciation for the program’s relevance and sustainability.
By restoring hope, breaking stigma, and normalizing mental health conversations, PET is helping to shape school environments where emotional wellbeing is valued alongside academic success.

Why PET Matters
Too many young people struggle in silence due to stigma, fear, or lack of understanding. The PET Program bridges this gap by:
• Creating safe, student-centered mental health hubs and clubs
• Breaking stigma surrounding mental health conversations
• Training students as peer advocates and young leaders
• Providing preventive mental health education
• Encouraging emotional intelligence, empathy, and resilience
• Strengthening school communities through collective support
At its core, PET is about reminding young people that they are not alone — and that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness.

Looking Ahead
With growing demand and visible impact, the PET Program continues to expand. Plateau State now joins Abuja as part of this growing movement, with more schools across Nigeria being onboarded. The long-term vision is clear: to establish PET hubs nationwide and nurture a generation of young people who are mentally aware, emotionally equipped, and empowered to lead positive change in their communities.
The journey is ongoing — and each new school reached represents another step toward a healthier, more resilient future.
